Ahmedabad: Indian citizenship to 195 Hindu refugees from Pakistan

195 Hindu refugees from Pakistan were granted Indian citizenship at a special ceremony in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on Thursday (December 11). The program was organized in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Shanghvi and Minister of State for Urban Development Darshana Ben Vaghela.

Of these, 122 people were granted citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), while 73 refugees were granted citizenship under the existing rules by the District Collector’s office. Addressing the program, Harsh Sanghvi said, “Today it is a matter of great joy for 195 people who have got citizenship together, such a sight is rarely seen in other states. Those who came to India as refugees after years of hardships, are now becoming active participants in the development of the country.”

Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sanghvi said that CAA has provided a path to respectable life and citizenship to the minorities facing persecution in neighboring countries. He also praised the Ahmedabad district administration, which consistently dealt with the citizenship files of genuine and eligible applicants from Pakistan on priority.

According to a report in Desh Gujarat, those getting citizenship include Dr. Mahesh Purohit, a gynecologist. He had been living in India since 1956, but has now formally received Indian citizenship. This incident of granting citizenship to such a large group simultaneously in Ahmedabad is being considered important, because it is becoming more clear the number of refugees who have actually benefited after the implementation of CAA.
