Russia-Ukraine war compared to Cold War victory, Trump calls Miracle Ice!
In an event organized at the White House on the historic victory of the American hockey team over the Soviet Union, Trump said that this victory was not limited to sports only, but it teaches big lessons. He said that at that time the American team had defeated the very strong Soviet team and no one expected this. The event served as a bill signing ceremony to honor the U.S. Olympic hockey team.
When Trump was asked what lessons this victory could teach for today’s conflicts, Trump directly mentioned Ukraine. He said that the situation remains the same to some extent and what happens next remains to be seen.
Trump said his administration is working to end the war, even as large numbers of soldiers are being killed every month. He told that about 25 thousand soldiers died in Russia and Ukraine last month and his aim is to stop these deaths.
On this occasion, Trump signed legislation to give commemorative medals to the 1980 hockey team, which he called “one of the greatest moments in the history of American sports.” Trump said that this team united the country and inspired the people.
Team captain Mike Erzione also said that the political and historical significance of the match became more apparent as time went on.
Trump described this victory as the beginning of America’s big comeback. Meanwhile, MP Pete Stauber said that this team strengthened the country at a time when it was needed most.
Trump also claimed that he has already stopped several wars and now has yet to end one more. Although he did not indicate any concrete diplomatic steps, but said that progress is being made in this direction.
The “Miracle on Ice” is the name given to the U.S. team’s 4–3 victory over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics, which was followed by defeat of Finland to win the gold medal. This match took place in the atmosphere of the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union at that time and became a symbol of America’s self-confidence.
