Mumbai local elections may be declared on Monday
Political turmoil has intensified in Mumbai regarding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2025/26. There is widespread speculation in political circles that the dates for the much-awaited BMC elections may be announced on Monday afternoon. A senior leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) told the media that the State Election Commission is likely to announce the election schedule by holding a press conference late Monday afternoon.
It is noteworthy that the last elections for 227 seats of BMC were held in February 2017. Since then, there has been continuous delay in municipal elections, due to which dissatisfaction has been seen among political parties as well as civil organizations and voters.
Regarding the upcoming elections, the ruling grand alliance BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) are expected to contest the elections unitedly. Although internal differences are being said regarding the distribution of seats, but strategically there seems to be a consensus on entering the fray with an alliance.
In contrast, differences have emerged within the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA), especially over the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) is in favor of contesting the elections along with MNS, while Congress is said to be apprehensive about this proposal. Congress leaders fear that an alliance with MNS may affect support among North Indian voters.
Before the possible announcement of BMC elections, the Mahayuti government has taken several major steps keeping the urban voters in mind. These include decisions like the process of granting Occupation Certificate (OC) to thousands of buildings, redevelopment of buildings with Pagdi system, promoting cluster development and providing relief to buildings falling in the funnel or flight path in the Santa Cruz area.
Political analysts believe that these announcements have been made directly keeping the municipal elections in mind, so as to garner the support of the urban middle class and stakeholders associated with redevelopment.
If election dates are announced on Monday, there will be a formal election conch sound in Mumbai politics. BMC is not only one of the richest municipal bodies in the country, but it also holds immense symbolic and strategic importance in the politics of Maharashtra. In such a situation, the eyes of all the parties are fixed on this election and political activities are likely to intensify in the coming days.
