Horrific shooting on Jews in Sydney, Australia; 10 died
At least 10 people were killed, while another person was seriously injured in a horrific shooting on Bondi Beach in Sydney city of Australia on Sunday (December 14). According to police, the attack was a targeted terrorist act aimed at the Jewish community’s Hanukkah festival. After the incident, high alert has been issued in the entire area and security agencies are carrying out a massive search operation.
According to Australian media reports, the attack took place during a Hanukkah event held near a children’s play area at Bondi Beach Park. Police sources said that the attack was being planned for several months. At least two armed attackers were active during the shooting, one of whom was killed at the scene, while the other was taken into custody after being shot and is being treated by emergency services.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers had several weapons and were wearing ammunition belts. In a video that surfaced on social media, a courageous civilian was seen snatching a shotgun from one of the attackers and trying to stop him, while the other attacker continued firing from the bridge. According to eyewitnesses, at least three different weapons were used.

As soon as information about the incident was received, 26 teams of New South Wales (NSW) Police and emergency services reached the spot. These included helicopters, special operations units and ICU paramedics. Many of the injured were admitted to St Vincent’s, Royal Prince Alfred and St George’s hospitals after being given first aid at the scene.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as shocking and extremely sad. He said he was in contact with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner and the NSW Premier and appealed to the public to only rely on official information. NSW Premier Chris Minns also described the attack as deeply disturbing, saying police and emergency services were on full alert.
Alex Rivchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, the peak body of the Australian Jewish community, confirmed that the attack occurred during Hanukkah celebrations. Terming it as horrifying, he said that a media consultant was also injured in this attack.
A local woman said her daughters were swimming in the sea nearby when suddenly the firing started. “A woman grabbed them and told them to run,” he said. At present the children are safe in the house of a local resident.
Bondi Beach is a major tourist destination in Sydney, where thousands of people visit every day. The incident is reminiscent of the hostage crisis that occurred at Sydney’s Lindt Café about 11 years ago. Police reiterated their appeal to avoid the area and said the investigation is ongoing and the situation is still developing.
