Fake Betnovate Clopg Skinshine Racket Busted
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has busted a big racket of fake medicines in Delhi-NCR on 14 December. In this action, two accused, 42-year-old Gaurav Bhagat and 27-year-old Vishal Gupta, who were manufacturing and selling fake ointment of Schedule-H category, available only on doctor’s prescription, have been arrested. Police have seized more than 7,500 fake tubes of Betnovate-C, Clop-G and Skinshine from an illegal factory in Ghaziabad.
This action came after raids conducted in Sadar Bazar in North Delhi and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, it was a well-planned network, which was supplying fake medicines to other parts of the country including Delhi.
According to the Crime Branch, the Cyber Cell had received information about the sale of fake medicines in Teliwada area, a big wholesale market of medicines and cosmetics in Sadar Bazaar. After this, the police raided a warehouse and recovered a large quantity of fake Schedule-H ointment.
In this regard, DCP (Crime) Aditya Gautam said that the seized medicines included Betnovate-C and Clop-G, which are commonly used in the treatment of sports injuries and skin related problems. He warned that the circulation of such counterfeit medicines is a serious threat to public health.
Further investigation led the police to an illegal manufacturing unit located in Mirpur Hindu village near Loni area of Ghaziabad. The factory was raided in the presence of drug inspectors and authorized representatives of the pharmaceutical companies concerned.
During the raid, the police recovered about 1,200 counterfeit Betnovate-C tubes, 2,700 Clop-G tubes, 3,700 Skinshine tubes and about 22,000 empty Clop-G tubes, ready to be filled. Apart from this, more than 350 kg of raw materials, chemicals, packaging materials and machinery used in construction were also seized. The total value of the seized material is being assessed.

A case has been registered against the arrested accused under relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code and Drugs and Cosmetics Act. FIR has been registered in the Crime Branch police station. Drug inspectors from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh inspected the spot and collected samples. Representatives of the concerned pharmaceutical companies confirmed that the recovered ointments were counterfeit and were neither manufactured in nor supplied by their companies. According to the police, the accused did not have any valid license to manufacture, store or sell the drugs.
According to media reports, the police suspect that this illegal activity may have been going on since the year 2019. After manufacturing, the counterfeit medicines were packed and sent to various markets through a network of vendors and delivery handlers.
