Bengal Sir Voter List Draft 58 Lakh Names

Under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, the possibility of major changes in the voter list is being expressed. According to The Economic Times report, more than 58 lakh names may be removed from the state’s voter list during this process. The Election Commission is going to make the draft electoral roll public on December 16, after which the general public will get an opportunity to check the list.

According to reports, the Election Commission started publishing the draft voter list from Sunday evening, which continued throughout the night. A senior Election Commission official told The Economic Times that the entire focus since Sunday evening was on the publication of the electoral rolls and the work continued throughout the night without any interruption.

The process of special intensive review in Bengal started on December 4, which was completed on December 11 after extending the deadline. During this, the voter list was thoroughly scrutinized so that incorrect, duplicate or ineligible names could be identified. The Election Commission says the objective of SIR is to make the voter list more accurate, transparent and updated.

The total population of West Bengal is more than 7.66 crores. The draft voter list prepared on this basis will be opened for public scrutiny on December 16. After this, citizens will be able to raise objections on errors related to their name, address or other details or submit claims for necessary corrections.

Election Commission sources also said that more than 90,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were deployed across the state to carry out this massive exercise. These BLOs carried out door-to-door verification and played an important role in updating voter records.

However, the potential number of deletions of over 58 lakh names has sparked discussion in political and social circles. Only after the release of the draft list will it become clear how many names are actually removed from the final voter list and in how many cases amendments are made after claims and objections.

The Election Commission argues that accurate and updated voter lists are necessary to maintain the credibility of the democratic process. The public response to the draft roll in the coming days and the number of objections will decide the shape of the final voter list to be released in February.
