Maharashtra Birth Registration Ghotala Yavatmal
A big scam related to birth registration has come to light in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra. Shendursani gram panchayat in Arni taluka of the district recorded 27,397 births in the Civil Registration System (CRS) in just three months from September to November, while the total population of the village is said to be around 1,500. This discrepancy has come to light during the verification campaign conducted on the instructions of the state government.
After the matter came to light on November 24, an FIR was registered at Yavatmal City Police Station on December 16 (Tuesday) on the complaint of the District Health Officer (DHO) under sections 318(4), 337, 336(3), 304(2) of the IPC and sections 65 and 66 of the IT Act. Police inspector Nandkishore Kale said, “A complaint of irregularities in birth registration entries in Shendursani has been received and investigation has been initiated.”

According to Somaiya, most of the names recorded in the records have been found to belong to West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and surrounding areas. “I have spoken to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded cancellation of all these birth registration entries,” he said. Investigation also revealed that the CRS ID (MH18241RE) of Shendursani Gram Panchayat was found mapped to Mumbai, which points towards cyber fraud.

On the instructions of the state government, the verification campaign for identification and cancellation of illegal and delayed birth-death registrations was started in the Gram Panchayat from December 16. During this, Arni Health Department officials found 27,397 birth and seven death entries registered in the CRS software between September to November 2025, which was unusual in proportion to the actual population of the village.
After this the DHO gave this information to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Council, Mander Patki. The CEO constituted an inquiry committee under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Panchayat Department. The committee’s on-site investigation found that these 27,397 birth and seven death records do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Gram Panchayat and are highly doubtful.
The technical investigation was initiated by the Deputy Director of Health Services, Pune. Investigation through the state login system revealed that the CRS ID was mapped to Mumbai. The matter was then referred to the Additional Registrar General of India, New Delhi and the National Informatics Center (NIC). In their assessment, it was described as a case of cyber fraud, information about which was given to the Zilla Parishad from Pune on 11 December. At present, the investigation is going on and strict action is being taken against the culprits.
