BJP’s strong victory in Maharashtra civic elections trends

In the initial trends of counting of votes for Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayat elections in Maharashtra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Mahayuti seem to be getting a clear lead. On Saturday (December 19), voting was held in 288 urban bodies, city councils and 42 nagar panchayats of the state, the results of which are coming out today. These elections are not being considered limited only to local administration, but are being seen as the political foundation that will determine the inclination of voters towards power in urban areas and the direction of the upcoming Municipal Corporation and Assembly elections.

According to the latest trends, BJP has crossed the mark of 120 seats in the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections. Talking about the situation of other parties, Shiv Sena seems to be leading or winning 42 seats, Congress 33, NCP 31, NCP (SP) 8 and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) 6 seats. At the same time, 13 seats are seen going to the account of other parties and independents. If we look at the alliance level, Mahayuti has got a lead on a total of 193 seats, while Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) seems to be limited to 47 seats.

There is an atmosphere of excitement in the BJP camp as soon as the initial trends are revealed. BJP MLA Ameet Satam, reacting, said, “Mahayuti is winning more than 80 per cent of the seats in the state. Municipal Council is just a tableau, BMC is still pending.” His statement is being linked to the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, which are being proposed in January 2026.

A total of 6,859 candidates were in the fray in this election, who tried their luck on 288 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayat seats. In many places the election contest was straight party versus party, while in many city councils there was a tough competition between local influential leaders. Some candidates had contested with the support of a party and some as independent candidates.

In this urban election of Maharashtra, BJP, Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and many local forces are being tested politically. While the Mahayuti is trying to prove its unity and organizational strength, the MVA is trying to show that the urban voters still stand with it. For parties like MNS, these elections are also considered important to maintain their political relevance in urban areas.

With the final results of vote counting, it will become more clear in which direction the urban politics of Maharashtra is moving and which party or alliance seems to be in a strong position for the upcoming big elections.
