Telangana Christmas Sonia Gandhi Revanth Reddy Row

Addressing the Christmas celebrations organized by the government in Hyderabad, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said minorities in the state should get full benefits of all welfare schemes. The Chief Minister also said that the pending issues of cemeteries related to Christian and Muslim communities will be resolved soon. During this, Chief Minister Reddy said that Christmas is being celebrated in Telangana because of the sacrifice and contribution of Sonia Gandhi, after which there has been a storm of criticism in the politics of the state. BJP is trying to term this statement of the Chief Minister as sycophancy.

In his address, the Chief Minister described the month of December as special for Telangana and the Congress Party and termed it as the month of miracles. He said that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s birthday falls in this month and Telangana got statehood in this month. Revanth Reddy said, “…Sonia Gandhi was born on December 9. Many youth sacrificed their lives for a separate Telangana and despite suffering a huge political defeat in Andhra Pradesh, she kept Telangana in power.”

A video of this statement of the Chief Minister has gone viral rapidly on social media. In the video, he is seen saying, “The reason we are celebrating the Christmas festival here (in Telangana) today is because of the contribution of Sonia Gandhi.” After this comment, controversy has arisen in the politics of the state.

Opposition parties Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) have expressed strong objection to the Chief Minister’s statement. The Telangana unit of BJP shared the video on social media platform X, calling it sycophancy. “Christmas is being celebrated here today because of the sacrifice and contribution of Sonia Gandhi. Telangana was ruled by Congress Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Now we will be told that the sun rises because of the Gandhi family. When sycophancy crosses all limits, everything is used for political sycophancy,” the BJP post said.

While sharing the video, BRS also took a jibe and wrote, “Congress Chief Minister Revanth said that today everyone is celebrating Christmas only because of the sacrifice of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi…”

The debate has intensified in political circles regarding the Chief Minister’s proposed law and his statement. On one hand, the government is calling it a step towards religious harmony and equality, while the opposition is linking it to political rhetoric and personality worship. When this law will be presented in the Assembly in the coming budget session, it is considered certain that there will be extensive discussion and political conflict on it.
