Regular consultations are being held with textile exporters to assess the impact of US tariffs.

The Central government has said that it is regularly consulting with exporters across the country, especially the MSME sector, to assess the impact of the tariffs imposed by the US on Indian textile and apparel exports. The government has clarified that a comprehensive and multi-pronged strategy is being worked out to deal with the challenges posed by the US tariff measures.

Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, said the government is not only monitoring the immediate issues related to exports, but is also taking proactive steps to ensure long-term solutions. He said that intensive dialogue is going on with the US administration for a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement (BTA) between India and America.

According to the minister, the strategy includes steps such as trade relief measures provided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), credit guarantee scheme for exporters, and boosting domestic demand through next-generation GST reforms. Along with this, a new Export Promotion Mission has been implemented to support exporters, so that they can get financial and policy assistance.

The government also said that emphasis is being laid on making free trade agreements (FTAs) with new countries and making better use of existing FTAs. Additionally, the export obligation period under the Advance Authorization Scheme has been extended.

The Minister of State said that the PLI scheme for MMF Apparel, MMF Fabrics and Technical Textiles has been amended, so that the conditions related to investment and entry can be simplified. In order to ensure availability of raw material, customs duty exemption has been given on cotton import till 31 December 2025.

Along with this, the government is providing relief to apparels and made-ups under RoSCTL (Refund of State and Central Taxes) scheme, while RoDTEP scheme is being implemented for other textile products.

The Minister informed that the Textiles Ministry is holding regular meetings with exporters, Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and all other stakeholders, including MSMEs, to properly assess the impact of the US tariffs and other challenges.

According to government data, India’s textile and apparel exports (except handicrafts) during January to November 2025 stood at $32,560.04 million, showing a marginal growth of 0.26 per cent over the same period last year.

The government also clarified that it is continuously monitoring India’s textile and apparel exports to other countries across the world, including the US, and assessing the impact of the US tariffs on various sub-sectors.
