Why is ‘binge drinking’ more dangerous during New Year celebrations? doctors warning
As New Year celebrations approach, the trend of parties and alcohol also increases. But global health agencies are warning that excessive drinking in a single night during festivals can prove to be more dangerous than normal or regular alcohol consumption. According to doctors, considering it as just a hangover is a serious mistake, as its effects can affect the brain, heart, liver and even mental health.
Doctors say that New Year’s Eve becomes a high-risk setting, where prolonged drinking, consumption of different types of alcohol, dehydration, not eating properly, cold and physical fatigue, all these combine to break the body’s stamina. This is why a “celebratory drink” can quickly turn into a physiological risk.
According to Consultant Neurologist Dr Bharat Kumar Surisetty, alcohol temporarily affects the brain’s neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin. Once alcohol is consumed, these levels drop rapidly and the brain goes into an over-stimulated state, which can lead to anxiety, nervousness and panic attacks. Today it is being called anxiety. Drinking large amounts of alcohol rapidly also adversely affects sleep. Sleep induced by alcohol is not deep, leaving the next day full of brain fog, irritability and emotional instability.
According to doctors, people who drink only on special occasions are at greater risk. Low tolerance leads to increased blackouts, bad decisions, and accidents. According to him, too much alcohol in a single night can be a shock to the nervous system.
According to reports, the liver can process only a limited amount of alcohol. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol causes accumulation of poisonous elements like acetaldehyde, which can lead to sudden liver inflammation, vomiting, high acidity and jaundice. Even a single binge episode can trigger alcoholic hepatitis in non-drinkers.
According to cardiologists, drinking too much alcohol suddenly increases stress hormones like adrenaline, which can cause heart rate and blood pressure to increase rapidly. This can trigger arrhythmia, heart attack and stroke. This is known as ‘Holiday Heart Syndrome’, in which alcohol disrupts the electrical system of the heart. The heart reacts not to the frequency of alcohol, but to its dosage. Even a single night’s overdose can lead to a serious cardiac event.
Too much alcohol consumed in one night on New Year exceeds the metabolic capacity of the body. After this, anxiety, panic, sleep disturbances and ‘post-party emotional crash’ are seen.
Doctors are of the opinion that celebration should not be synonymous with self-harm. The keys to a safe celebration are hydration, eating in moderation, getting enough sleep, and opting not to drink altogether. In the words of experts, the real danger is not the alcohol, but the assumption that just one night in will do no harm.
