Foxconn’s new iPhone plant to recruit 30,000 workers
Taiwanese contract manufacturer of iPhone Foxconn has recruited around 30,000 employees for its new iPhone assembly plant located in Devanahalli, Karnataka. Spread over 300 acres, the facility has reached this scale in just eight-nine months. Production trials began here in April-May and the unit is currently assembling several models, including the iPhone 17 Pro Max, of which more than 80 percent of production is earmarked for export.
Nearly 80 percent of the employees recruited are women, primarily aged between 19 and 24 years. Most of them are doing their first jobs and have come here after completing high school or polytechnic education. Many workers are migrants from neighboring states, attracted by an average monthly salary of ₹18,000, free accommodation in dedicated dormitories and subsidized food.
New recruits are being given six weeks of on-the-job training. Currently four assembly lines are operating in the plant, which is proposed to be increased to around 12 next year. After this, about 50,000 employees are likely to work in this unit at peak capacity.
Foxconn is investing around ₹20,000 crore in this project. The Devanahalli site is being developed as a mini-township, which will include residential quarters, medical facilities, schools and recreational facilities. The company’s objective is to create a safe, sustainable and sustainable work environment for its employees.
The Devanahalli unit is likely to become India’s largest factory in terms of employment and production capacity. It will be bigger than Foxconn’s existing facility in Tamil Nadu, which employs about 41,000 employees.
This rapid expansion is in line with Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain by reducing dependence on China. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme of the Government of India has accelerated this process. Currently, around 45 local companies in India are contributing to the iPhone manufacturing supply chain and all models are being produced for global markets.
A senior government official described the expansion as an example of successful collaboration between government and industry. According to him, the scale at which iPhone manufacturing is happening in India today was unimaginable just four years ago. This unit of Devanahalli is not only playing an important role in employment generation, but is also being considered a major step towards establishing India as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
