Lucknow Kgmu Resident Doctor Attempted Suicide Conversion Pressure
A serious case of alleged forced religious conversion and mental harassment has come to light in Lucknow-based King George Medical University (KGMU). A Hindu woman resident doctor has accused her Muslim colleague of emotional exploitation in the name of love affair, pressurizing her to convert to Islam for marriage and later continuous mental torture. Due to this mental pressure, the female doctor attempted suicide.
A complaint regarding the matter has been lodged with the Chief Minister’s Public Hearing Portal and the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission. Taking cognizance of the allegations, the KGMU administration has confirmed that it has launched an internal investigation.
According to the complaint given by the victim’s family, the woman doctor met the accused resident doctor while studying at KGMU in July 2025. Regular conversations started taking place between the two and gradually this relationship turned into a love affair. The family alleges that the accused emotionally and physically abused their daughter on the pretext of marriage.
When it came to marriage, the accused started pressurizing the female doctor to convert to Islam. Family members say that when their daughter refused to convert, the accused suddenly broke off relations. Even after this he continued to harass her mentally. It has been said in the complaint that due to this behaviour, the female doctor went into deep mental depression and started living in fear and stress.
According to family members, on December 17, the female doctor attempted suicide by consuming a large quantity of medicines inside her room in the KGMU hostel. As his condition deteriorated, he was immediately taken to the trauma center and later admitted to the Critical Care Management (CCM) ICU. After treatment, his condition stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital on 19 December.
After the incident, the victim’s family lodged a formal complaint with the Chief Minister’s Public Hearing Portal and the State Women’s Commission. The female doctor herself has submitted a complaint to the concerned authorities and demanded justice.
In the complaint, the victim’s father has also alleged that the accused doctor had already converted a Hindu woman and married her in February, the information of which was hidden from his daughter. The family claims that when this came to light, the accused said that he would leave his wife and marry their daughter, provided she agreed to convert.
KGMU spokesperson Professor K.K. Singh said that both the parties are first year resident doctors of the pathology department. Taking cognizance of the matter, the university has started an internal investigation and the families of both have been called. A factual investigation of the allegations is being done. Further action in the case will depend on the findings of the investigation and the decision of the relevant government and statutory bodies.
During this, Dr. Bhupendra of the National Medical Organization of KGMU disclosed on the matter, “…we have received information that the department is pressurizing the girl and supporting others… When the girl refused to convert, they started following her and threatening her… She took this step out of frustration…”
