Snowfall in Saudi Arabia for the first time in 30 years, why is the weather changing in the desert?
Saudi Arabia is usually known for its extreme heat and dry desert climate but was recently hit by an extraordinary winter season. Snowfall, severe cold and widespread rain have been recorded in the northern and central parts of the country, which not only surprised the common people but also alerted the administration. This phenomenon has been seen for the first time in almost three decades, when white blanket of snow was seen in many areas of Saudi Arabia.
Under this unexpected change in weather, the maximum impact was seen in Tabuk province of northern Saudi Arabia. Snowfall was recorded in the higher reaches here, especially on the approximately 2,600 meter high Jebel al-Lawz mountain. In mountain tourist areas like Trozena, snow fell along with light rain, making the area look like a European mountain region.
Snowfall was also reported in the Hail region, including areas around Hail city. This is considered to be a very rare incident in a country like Saudi Arabia. At many places the temperature dropped below zero degrees Celsius in the morning, leading to snow accumulation in high and open areas. According to meteorological department officials, this situation was caused by a powerful cold air mass, which entered central and northern Saudi Arabia.
Along with snowfall, light to moderate rain was also recorded in many parts of the country. Light to moderate rain fell in Bir bin Hermes, Al-Ayinah, Ammar, Shakra and Al-Ula governorates. At the same time, moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in the capital Riyadh, Qassim and some areas of the Eastern Province, increasing the risk of waterlogging and flash floods in low-lying areas. Snowfall was also confirmed in areas like Al-Majma and Al-Ghat, north of Riyadh, where snow accumulation was seen at higher places.
The National Center for Meteorology said that this unusual weather is the result of the mutual influence of cold winds and rain clouds. Authorities have warned that low temperature conditions may persist for some more time, especially in the northern and central regions. Citizens have been advised to drive carefully and stay away from flood-prone valleys.

Pictures and videos of snow-clad mountains and desert areas went viral on social media and people gathered in large numbers to see them. Although experts say such weather events are linked to specific atmospheric conditions, their increasing frequency also highlights concerns about climate change and increasing incidence of extreme weather globally.
