Through your capital, your rights initiative, people got the forgotten Rs 2000 crore!
This amount has been returned through the nationwide awareness and facilitation initiative of the Central Government called ‘Your Capital, Your Rights’. This campaign was launched in October 2025, so that people can identify their forgotten or stuck money and get it back. This campaign was run by the Department of Financial Services of the Finance Ministry.
For generations, people in India have been saving to secure their future. They save by opening bank accounts, buying insurance policies, investing in mutual funds, getting dividends from shares and saving money for retirement.
But, with time many times people forget about this money. The reason for this could be change of address, old records, lack of necessary papers or lack of information to the family members.
This money is not lost anywhere nor is it misused. All of them remain in secure financial institutions under government rules, but are unable to reach the right person.
Even many times people do not even know that money is deposited somewhere in their name.
According to government data, about Rs 78,000 crore are lying as unclaimed deposits in the country’s banks. About Rs 14,000 crore is lying unclaimed with insurance companies, about Rs 3,000 crore in mutual funds and about Rs 9,000 crore as dividends on shares. This shows that a huge amount of people’s money is still not being used.
This campaign of the government is working to reconnect people with their forgotten money, so that their money can reach the right person at the right time.
Unclaimed money is created when a person or his legal heirs do not collect money belonging to his bank account, insurance, investments or pension for a long period of time. Usually this happens due to change of place in everyday life, change of contact information or lack of information.
The government is working closely with institutions like RBI, IRDAI, SEBI, IEPFA and PFRDA for this work, so that people can identify and get their money back through an easy and clean process.
