Karnataka Evm Survey Congress Government

Public confidence in electronic voting machines (EVMs) appears to be unwavering in a survey conducted by the Congress-ruled Karnataka government. In this study conducted by the Congress government of Karnataka after the Lok Sabha elections 2024, 83.61 percent voters have described EVMs as reliable. After this conclusion came to light, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations questioning the electoral process and the reliability of EVMs.

The survey titled “Evaluation of Endline Survey of KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practice) of Citizens” was commissioned by the Karnataka government through Chief Electoral Officer V. Anbukumar. The survey covered 5,100 respondents from 102 assembly seats in Bengaluru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Mysuru administrative divisions.

According to the survey, 69.39 percent people believed that EVMs give accurate results, while 14.22 percent completely agreed with this. In the division-wise data, the highest level of trust was recorded in Kalaburagi, where 83.24 percent people agreed and 11.24 percent strongly agreed. In Mysuru, 70.67 percent agreed and 17.92 percent strongly agreed. In Belagavi, 63.90 percent agreed and 21.43 percent completely agreed. Whereas in Bengaluru division, the level of strong agreement was the lowest at 9.28 percent, although 63.67 percent people expressed confidence in EVMs here too. Neutral opinion was highest in Bengaluru at 15.67 per cent.

It is noteworthy that Rahul Gandhi has been continuously accusing BJP and Election Commission of India of EVM manipulation and ‘vote theft’. In such a situation, BJP has given a sharp reaction regarding the results of the survey.

The BJP said the statewide survey has clearly shown that “people trust elections, people trust EVMs and people trust India’s democratic process,” and called it a “slap in the face” for the Congress.

The party also criticized the decision of the Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to conduct local body elections through ballot paper. According to the BJP, “Despite such clear public confidence, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government is deciding to take Karnataka backwards by announcing elections through ballot paper, a system notorious for manipulation, delay and abuse.”

BJP further alleged that Congress questions institutions only when it loses elections and praises the same system when it wins. “This is not principled politics. This is convenient politics. And no amount of fabricated stories can now hide this truth,” the party said.
