Chomu Atikaraman Bulldozer Karwai

On Thursday (January 1) morning, the administration started a large-scale encroachment removal campaign in Chomu town, located about 40 kilometers from Jaipur in Rajasthan. Under this action, illegal constructions done on public roads in many areas including bus stand area and Pathan Mohalla (Imam Chowk) were removed with bulldozers. Heavy police force was deployed across the area to deal with any untoward situation.

This action has been taken about a week after the violent incident that took place on the night of 26 December 2025. In fact, the situation had worsened while removing huge stones lying on the road outside the Kalandari Mosque located near Chomu Bus Stand. These stones were deposited on the roadside for a long time, due to which the road had become narrow and traffic was being disrupted for years. According to local people, some of the stones were lying there for more than 40 years, but the problem had become serious with the increase in economic activities and number of vehicles in the area.

After complaints from local citizens, the administration took the matter into cognizance. It was told that an agreement was reached between the Mosque Committee and the Municipal Administration, under which stones were to be removed from the road. According to this, on December 25, police and machinery reached the spot and initially the work of removing stones was carried out peacefully.

However, when the administration tried to install iron railings along the roadside to prevent future encroachments, the local people opposed it. Late in the night the protest turned into stone pelting, in which several policemen were injured. Police used tear gas and mild force to control the situation. More than 110 people were detained in this case, out of which at least 19 people were arrested. The arrested accused include Mukhtar Ali, Mohsin Khan and other names.

Following the incident, a flag march was conducted in the area and internet services were temporarily suspended to stop rumours. After this, on December 29, the Municipal Council issued notices to the operators of four illegal constructions and about 20 illegal slaughter houses and directed them to remove encroachments like stairs, ramps, platforms within three days. Besides, notices were also pasted at the homes of 24 people accused of pelting stones at the police.

When no response to the notice was received by 31 December and encroachments were not removed, on 1 January the Chomu Municipal Council initiated bulldozing operations, citing municipal laws and court directions. Municipal Council health inspector Sandeep Singh Kavia said, “Three days ago, 20-22 people were given notices to remove encroachments on the road. Now action is being taken after the deadline has been met.”

Under “Operation Clean”, illegal ramps, walls and other structures built outside more than 50 houses and shops from Ashok Plaza to Imam Chowk were removed. During the action, some women protested and were removed by the police. Additional forces, including a company of Rajasthan Armed Forces (RAC), were deployed to maintain law and order.

The administration clarified that this step is necessary to widen the road and ensure smooth traffic flow and action against encroachment will continue in the future also. During this time, while removing debris outside the mosque, it was reported that an old air gun was also recovered. While some people are opposing the action, many residents of the town support it, saying that the road was blocked for years and the slaughterhouses and meat shops running without licenses were causing public nuisance and filth.
