Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi Operation Sindoor

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said on Tuesday (January 13) that the progress made by India in the field of security in the year 2025 has been satisfactory. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said that this operation clearly demonstrated India’s readiness, precision and strategic clarity. Also, the Army Chief, citing India’s response after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, said that it reflects today’s global reality that “only those nations that are prepared survive.”

Addressing the annual press conference of the Indian Army, General Dwivedi extended greetings on Lohri, Veterans Day and Army Day. He also praised the Indian media and said that the media has played an “important role” in acting as a bridge between the army and the country. Citing the coverage of Operation Sindoor as an example, he described it as full of patriotism and extremely enthusiastic.

“The past year has seen a sharp increase in the number of armed conflicts across the world. These global changes underline a simple reality — the nations that prepare survive. Against this backdrop, India’s balanced and determined response to cross-border terrorism, Operation Sindoor, demonstrated our readiness, precision and strategic clarity,” the Army Chief said.

General Dwivedi said that given the call for ‘JAI — Jointness, Self-reliance, Innovation’ given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2025, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s announcement of the Year of Reforms in January 2025 and the Indian Army’s own decade-long transformation efforts, “we can justifiably be extremely satisfied with the progress made during the year 2025.”

Clarifying the situation after Operation Sindoor, the Army Chief said, “After Operation Sindoor, the incidents initiated by terrorists have almost stopped. The activities have reduced considerably. This does not mean that we have reduced our presence in J&K or withdrawn any troops from there. We have maintained the same level of pressure. Talking about the camps on the western side, there are still eight camps active there, it seems that there are about 100 camps there.” There may be 150 people. As far as political rhetoric is concerned, they are supporting those who promote radicalism and instigating people to come here, so I will not be able to answer it immediately. As far as our vigilance is concerned, Operation Sindoor is on.

Referring to the situation on the Eastern Front, the Army Chief said, “In line with our strategic priority on this front, our deployment along the Line of Actual Control remains balanced and strong. At the same time, development of capabilities and strengthening of infrastructure continues as part of the whole of government approach.”

Speaking on the Western Front, General Dwivedi recalled the actions following the Pahalgam terror attack and said that “a clear decision was taken at the highest level to respond decisively.” He said, “Operation Sindoor was conceived and executed with precision. Starting at 22 minutes on May 7 and lasting 88 hours till May 10, the coordinated action struck deep and destroyed the terrorist infrastructure and neutralized the long-standing nuclear rhetoric.”

He further said that the Army successfully destroyed seven out of nine targets and played an important role in ensuring a balanced response to the subsequent actions by Pakistan. The Army Chief reiterated that “Operation Sindoor is ongoing and any future misadventure will be responded to strongly.”

General Dwivedi also appreciated the active role of the Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, civil bodies, state administration and various ministries like Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Ministry of Railways. “Operation Sindoor was the best example of tri-service coordination under clear political direction and complete freedom of action,” he said.
