South Korean President said, relations with Japan are very important in the changed circumstances!
South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung told Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday that cooperation between the two countries is more important than ever in view of the complex and rapidly changing international environment.
Lee said these things at the beginning of the summit with Takaichi. He urged both countries to forget the painful past of Japan’s occupation of the Korean Peninsula and move towards a better future.
“Amidst a complex and bewildering international system, I believe cooperation between Korea and Japan is more important than ever,” Lee said, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Li held summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier this month. The talks took place at a time when tensions between Beijing and Tokyo were at their peak over Takaichi’s comments on Taiwan.
Lee said South Korea and Japan have improved their relations in the past 60 years since diplomatic ties were normalized.
Takaichi said she would work closely with Lee to promote regional stability, and expressed hope that his visit would help further improve Seoul-Tokyo relations.
Li expressed hope to enhance cooperation between artificial intelligence, economy, society, culture and people.
“Geopolitical uncertainty is increasing, multilateralism in the international community is being tested, and interdependence within global supply chains is being weaponized,” he said.
He further said, “To deal with the serious challenges that lie ahead, I hope that both the countries will stand by each other on the basis of mutual trust.”
Li is on “shuttle diplomacy” aimed at maintaining the momentum of improving ties. He reached Nara as part of a leadership-level visit.
The two leaders previously held summit talks on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Gyeongju in late October and met briefly on the sidelines of the Group of 20 leaders’ meeting in South Africa in November.
