Karnataka The State Government Is In Confusion Over The Chief Ministers Post Siddaramaiah Has Sought Clarification From Rahul Gandhi
Amid ongoing speculation over the leadership within the Congress government in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sought clarity on the situation by requesting a meeting with party MP Rahul Gandhi. Quoting sources, it has been said that the Chief Minister has said that due to the discussions about change of leadership in the state, there is constant confusion in the state government.
According to sources, Siddaramaiah expressed his desire to meet Rahul Gandhi and said that he wants to expand his cabinet, but there is confusion due to rumors regarding possible change in the post of Chief Minister. This development has come at a time when there is continuous speculation about leadership tension in Karnataka Congress, although the central leadership of the party has repeatedly denied any internal crisis.
Last month, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had rejected reports of leadership struggle and said there was no confusion at the level of the party high command. He had said, “The high command has not created any confusion, if there is any internal issue then it should be resolved by the state leadership itself.” Kharge had also cautioned party leaders from taking personal credit for the Congress’s electoral victory in Karnataka and said the success was the result of collective efforts of party workers over decades.
Both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have consistently denied reports of differences. Siddaramaiah says that he has full confidence of the party leadership and he will complete his entire tenure. He has rejected claims of any rotational chief ministerial system.
At the same time, DK Shivakumar has also termed the discussions of differences as media speculation and opposition propaganda. He had earlier said, “Are the Chief Minister and I not working like brothers? I have no differences with any Congress leader. The party leadership will take a decision at the appropriate time, which will be accepted by both the leaders.”
Actually, this discussion is about an alleged internal agreement, under which Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were to share the post of Chief Minister for two and a half years each. Siddaramaiah was sworn in on May 20, 2023, and the leadership change was expected around November 20 last year, on completion of half of the government’s term. When this did not happen, some MLAs supporting Shiv Kumar intensified their demands and reached Delhi and met the party leadership.
However, the Congress party is saying that there was no such agreement regarding sharing of power and Siddaramaiah will complete the full five-year term. Responding to the MLAs going to Delhi, Shivkumar had said that factionalism is not in his nature and reiterated that Siddaramaiah will remain the Chief Minister. He had said, “All 140 MLAs are my MLAs. Forming factions is not in my blood.”
