Kerala Muslim Jamaat Ernakulam Vibhajan
Muslim community in Kerala has started demanding division of Ernakulam district. The organization says that administrative restructuring has now become necessary in view of the demographic changes and changing social realities in the district. The Jamaat has proposed that a new district be created separate from Ernakulam, with Muvattupuzha as its headquarters.
Addressing a press conference held on Monday (January 12), the leaders of the organization said that this demand has emerged from the interaction with the public during their statewide yatra (travel campaign). The Jamaat is going to formally present this proposal before the Kerala government. The organization also said that similar administrative and population challenges exist in Malappuram district, where bifurcation of the district should be considered.
Kerala Muslim Jamaat argues that administrative pressure is continuously increasing in large and densely populated districts, affecting balanced development, effective governance and quality of civic services. According to the organization, formation of a new district with Muvattupuzha as its headquarters will remove regional imbalance and improve access to government services to remote areas.
Let us tell you that, according to the 2011 census, followers of Hindu religion were the largest group in Ernakulam district (2011), whose number was 45.99% of the total population. This was followed by the Christian community, which was 38.03%, and the Muslim community was in third place, with a share of 15.67%. Apart from this, followers of Sikh, Buddhist and Jain religions were also present in the district, but their numbers were very less. Although there are no exact figures for 2026, claims are often made that the Muslim population will be more than 25%, which makes this demand even more worrying.
Along with the demand for administrative restructuring, the Jamaat is raising many other issues. The organization expressed the need to develop Ernakulam as a major educational centre. Besides, strict action against the drug network that is destroying the youth, control over the increasing pollution in the Periyar River, and immediate resolution of the shortage of infrastructure and staff at the Government Medical College at Kalamassery were also demanded.
Kerala Muslim Jamaat leaders Syed Ibrahimul Khalil Al Bukhari and Perod Abdurahman Sakafi, organization secretary C P Saithalvi Master, Ernakulam district president V H Ali Darimi and district secretary C T Hashim Thangal were present in this press conference.
During the press conference, reactions were also given to the recent political comments regarding Marad riots. Syed Ibrahimul Khalil Al Bukhari said that there is no justification in scratching old wounds at this time. His comments came after CPI(m) leader A. Of. This came in the context of Balan’s statement in which he had said that if UDF returned to power, Marad-like violence could happen again.
Perod Abdurahman Sakafi also described Balan’s statement as politically motivated and said that there is no need to say anything more on this issue from the Jamaat. The organization says that society needs to move forward and remain focused on development issues.
