Sheikh Hasina’s First Speech From India Makes Serious Allegations Against Bangladesh’s Yunus Government

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, who is living in exile in India, has made a sharp attack on the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus through her first public speech. Before the general elections of Bangladesh to be held on February 12, Sheikh Hasina called on the people of the country to stand against the current government, saying that the Yunus government is not capable of conducting free and fair elections. In his speech, the Awami League chief, while referring to the current situation in Bangladesh, made serious allegations of alleged atrocities on women, girls and religious minorities.

Sheikh Hasina’s message came in the form of an audio speech, which was first played at the ‘Save Democracy in Bangladesh’ program organized at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club. After this it was also released on the X handle of Bangladesh Awami League. This is his first public address since he had to take refuge in India after being removed from power on August 5, 2024.

In her speech, Sheikh Hasina described Mohammad Yunus as a ‘corrupt, power-hungry traitor’ and alleged that he was involved in a conspiracy to oust her from power. “In these difficult times, the entire nation must move forward united and inspired by our spirit of the great liberation war,” he said.

Regarding the current situation in Bangladesh, Hasina said, “Democracy (in Bangladesh) is now in exile. Human rights have been destroyed. Freedom of the press has been abolished. Violence, torture and sexual assaults against women and girls are not stopping.” He further alleged that “religious minorities are facing continuous persecution. There is no such thing as law and order.”

The former Prime Minister, in his speech in Bengali, also demanded an ‘impartial investigation by an international agency’ into the recent developments. He termed the interim government of Mohammad Yunus as a ‘foreign puppet’ and described it as his ‘enemy of the nation’. Sheikh Hasina called on the people of Bangladesh to come forward to protect the Constitution, which in her words was ‘written by the martyrs with their blood’ and which brought independence to Bangladesh.

It is noteworthy that Sheikh Hasina and her party have been continuously raising questions regarding Awami League being stopped from contesting elections during the tenure of Yunus government. This speech, which came just before the elections, is being considered to create a stir in the politics of Bangladesh, especially at a time when there is already a heated debate in the country regarding law and order, human rights and electoral fairness.
