India Will Stand With Democratic Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (February 13) congratulated party leader Tariq Rahman on Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) decisive victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. In a message on social media platform

In his message, PM Modi said, “I heartily congratulate Mr. Tariq Rahman for leading the BNP to a massive victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our many ties and advance our common development goals.” I am doing it.”

The Prime Minister’s message was also reposted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on X, indicating New Delhi’s continued support for the political transition. During this time BNP has claimed majority in national elections. According to media estimates, the party has crossed the majority mark of 151 seats, although the final results are yet to be formally announced by the Bangladesh Election Commission.

BNP’s media cell said in a statement issued on Twitter that the party is in a position to form the next government by securing majority. These elections were held to select a new government in place of the interim administration formed 18 months ago. This interim government was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, who took charge in August 2024 after the fall of the Awami League regime. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party was later dissolved.

The elections were widely seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami, as Sheikh Hasina fled the country to India and is currently in exile. The 13th parliamentary elections were held simultaneously with a referendum on an 84-point reform agenda known as the ‘July National Charter’.

If BNP forms the government, Tariq Rahman will be the first male Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the last 36 years. He returned to Bangladesh in December after living in self-exile for more than 17 years. After the election victory, Rehman has urged party workers not to take out processions and organize special prayers across the country.
