Om Birla will represent India in Bangladesh oath ceremony!

The results of the 13th national parliamentary election held in Bangladesh have been declared and the new cabinet will take oath on 17 February. Election preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony. The interim government of Bangladesh has sent invitations to the heads of governments of 13 countries.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony. At the same time, the Ministry of External Affairs of India has informed that in place of PM Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India in the program.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a press release and informed, “Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government of Bangladesh led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairman Tariq Rahman in Dhaka on February 17, 2026.”

The Ministry of External Affairs further said, “The speaker’s participation in this important event reflects the deep and steadfast friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh and reaffirms India’s strong commitment to the democratic values ​​that bind our two countries.

“As neighbors bound by shared history, culture and mutual respect, India welcomes the arrival of an elected government in Bangladesh under the leadership of Tariq Rahman, whose vision and values ​​have received overwhelming support from the people.”

Chief advisor to the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has called heads of government of 13 countries to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet. So far, the list of invited countries includes China, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, UAE, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan.

On the morning of Tuesday, February 17, the newly elected Members of Parliament will take their oath of office. Later in the evening, the new cabinet will be formed and sworn in. The swearing-in ceremony will be led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.

The office of the chief advisor to the interim government, the Law Ministry and several sources in the BNP have confirmed this to Bangladeshi daily newspaper Prothom Alo. The election was held on Thursday and the Election Commission published the official notification of the winning candidates on Friday night.

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are already underway at the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat. This ceremony takes place in the oath taking room fixed in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhavan. Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat Secretary Kanij Maula said that arrangements are being made for the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday evening, February 17.

In the 13th parliamentary elections, voting was held on 12 February for 299 seats out of 300. The Election Commission had declared unofficial results for 297 seats. However, following the direction of the High Court, gazette notifications for Chittagong-2 and Chittagong-4 have not been issued yet.
