Interim bail to Rajpal Yadav in check bounce case
Delhi High Court on Monday (February 16) granted interim bail to Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav in the check bounce case. His lawyers told the court that Rs 1.5 crore has been deposited in the defendant’s bank account. The court clarified that Yadav would be released on interim bail if the demand draft is presented within the stipulated time limit. If this does not happen, the case will be heard again on Tuesday morning.
The actor had sought interim bail to attend his niece’s wedding to be held on February 19. With this relief, he has been allowed to attend the wedding. During the hearing, the court was told that the amount directed earlier has now been deposited in the complainant’s account. Granting relief, the court said, “Keeping in mind that the petitioner’s niece is going to get married in Shahjahanpur and today Rs 1.5 crore has been deposited in the respondent’s account, we are imposing an interim stay on the sentence.”
The court also directed that Rajpal Yadav appear in person or through video conferencing on the next date of hearing. If they have not already submitted their passport, they have been instructed to submit it. The interim stay on sentencing will remain in effect till March 18, the date of the next hearing.
Rajpal Yadav had challenged his sentence in the check bounce case. According to the complainant’s lawyer Avneet Singh Sikka, the actor had signed seven checks worth Rs 1.5 crore each. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1.35 crore for each check after the checks bounced. The complainant’s lawyer said that Yadav neither paid the fine nor was successful in getting a stay on the sentence. The High Court had earlier found no solid basis in his plea to stay his sentence.
It was also reported that Yadav had proposed a settlement through mediation in 2024, but allegedly did not pay the dues. Lawyers said Yadav filed several applications in the court of Justice Swarnkant Sharma seeking time for payment and also deposited Rs 75 lakh, but could not deposit the remaining amount. After this, on February 2, the court gave him two days to surrender. When he did not surrender within the stipulated time, he filed another application. Rajpal Yadav later surrendered, changed his legal representation and filed a fresh plea for interim bail to attend a family event.
