Former Assam Congress Chief Withdraws Resignation Hours After Quitting Party

Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora withdrew his decision just hours after resigning from the party on Monday (February 16) morning. After his resignation, the state Congress was in shock. In the morning he sent his resignation letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge through email. According to the news agency, he wrote in the letter that he was being ignored in the state unit and was not being given due importance by the leadership.

As soon as the news of his resignation spread, many senior Congress leaders reached his residence in Guwahati. These included current Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, Pradyut Bordoloi and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi. According to sources, the leaders tried to convince Bora to stay in the party. A few hours later he decided to withdraw his resignation.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Bora as the last Hindu leader of Assam Congress and said that he will visit his house on Tuesday (February 17) evening. Sarma claimed that Congress’s position has weakened in the state and some more MLAs may leave the party in the coming days.

Bhupen Bora was the President of Assam Congress from 2021 to 2025 and last year the responsibility was handed over to Gaurav Gogoi in his place. There was a belief within the party that the change of leadership would provide new energy to the organization, but this decision also gave rise to internal dissatisfaction. Bora is considered among the leaders who tried to reorganize the party at the grassroots level after its defeat in two consecutive assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters, Bora said that his decision was not motivated by any particular person or personal reason. “I have served the Congress for 32 years and I am concerned about the future of the party. I have mentioned the reasons for my resignation in detail in my resignation letter sent to the high command of the party,” he said.

This development is considered important for Congress before the upcoming elections in Assam. Although Bora’s withdrawal of resignation has brought relief to the party leadership, indications of internal differences remain the subject of political discussions.
