Ravi river water closed for Pakistan!
Tension between Pakistan and India still continues and India is now going to take another step to give a strong message to Pakistan. Due to India’s decision, Pakistan’s water problem may become more serious in the beginning of summer. Pakistan is already in trouble due to the suspension of the Indus Water Sharing Treaty, and now India is preparing to stop the excess water flow from the Ravi river by completing the construction of Shahpur Kandi Dam by March 31. For the past few years, due to lack of adequate storage capacity on the Indian side, the excess water of Ravi used to reach Pakistan. Now this situation is going to change from April, due to which the water flow towards Pakistan will further reduce.
Jammu and Kashmir Minister Javed Ahmed Rana announced this on Monday (February 16). He said that this decision has been taken with the aim of providing irrigation facilities to drought-hit Kathua and Samba districts. Excess water flowing towards Pakistan will and must be stopped. When asked what effect this would have on Pakistan, he replied, “Why are you worried about Pakistan? Let them cry about their problems.”
At present the excess water of Ravi river flows from Madhopur into Pakistan without any use. Rana said the Shahpur Kandi Dam, which was pending for years due to political neglect and differences between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, would now prevent this water wastage. This announcement comes a week after Union Water Resources Minister CR Patil said that the Indus River water currently flowing towards Pakistan will be stopped and used in the interest of India.
Before protesting, Pakistan should understand that this dam does not come under the purview of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), because India has full rights over the Ravi River, which is one of the three eastern rivers of the Indus. According to a 1960 treaty brokered by the World Bank, India is allowed full use of the waters of the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi, while the rights to the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab were given to Pakistan. Last year, Hindu tourists were killed in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, after which the situation has changed. India took swift action by canceling the water treaty and accelerating construction of hydropower projects and dams for better use and control of river water.
