While Prime Minister Modi was speaking, an animation was playing on a large screen behind him, showing a live AI-enabled sign language interpretation of his speech.
Addressing the summit, the Prime Minister said that Artificial Intelligence is the transformation of human history. He said that there are two types of people in the world today. One, who sees fear in AI and the other, who sees destiny in AI. I say with pride and responsibility that not fear, but India sees destiny and future in AI.
PM Modi said, “We have talent, energy capacity and policy clarity. I am happy that 3 Indian companies have launched their AI models and apps in this summit. These models showcase the talent of our youth and are also a reflection of the depth and diversity of the solutions India is providing.”
Prime Minister Modi said that today the journey from machine learning to learning machine is fast, deep and wide. Therefore, we have to keep the vision big and fulfill the responsibility equally big. He said that along with the present generation, we also have to worry about what form of AI we will hand over to the coming generations. So, the real question today is not what AI can do in the future. The question is what do we do with AI currently.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi introduced ‘Human Vision’ (MANAV) for AI. He said, “Manav means human being. ‘M’ in ‘MANAV’ means moral and ethical system, ‘A’ means accountable governance, ‘N’ means national sovereignty, ‘A’ means accessible and inclusive and ‘V’ means valid and authentic.
He asked how India views AI. Its clear reflection is in the theme of this summit (‘Sarvajan Hitaya – Sarvajan Sukhaay’). This is our benchmark. For AI, humans should not become just data points, humans should not be limited to just raw material. Therefore AI must be democratized. It has to be a medium of inclusion and empowerment, especially in the Global South.
