Immense possibilities of AI in India: Sam Altman!

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday said India is seeing extraordinary growth in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, and described India as one of the fastest growing markets in the world for the company.

Speaking to the media during the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ organized in the national capital, Altman said that the opportunities for AI in India are amazing and he is very happy to be here.

“This is one of the fastest growing markets in the world for us. Possibly the fastest growing market at the moment. It’s certainly the fastest growing market for Codex in particular,” he said.

Altman said ChatGPT now has more than 100 million weekly users in India, which include students, teachers, developers and entrepreneurs. “More than 100 million people are using ChatGPT every week,” he said.

Altman said the scale and pace at which AI is being adopted in India reflects the country’s growing role in the global AI ecosystem. Earlier, he announced the ‘OpenAI for India’ initiative at the summit.

The initiative aims to create infrastructure, strengthen skill development and foster local partnerships to develop AI solutions in India. He said the goal is to “build AI with India, for India and in India.”

Under this initiative, OpenAI will collaborate with key partners in India, starting with the Tata Group, to expand access to AI and unlock its economic and social benefits.

The partnership will focus on building sovereign AI capabilities, accelerating AI adoption across industries, training the workforce, and supporting India’s growing AI ecosystem.

Under OpenAI’s global Stargate initiative, the company and Tata Group will jointly develop AI-ready data center capabilities in India.

OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)’s Hypervault data center business. The capacity will start with 100 MW, which can be increased to 1 GW over time.

Altman said India’s strong tech talent, positive approach to AI and government support position the country to shape the future of large-scale democratic AI adoption.

He said the proposed infrastructure will enable OpenAI’s advanced models to operate safely within India. This will ensure low latency and compliance with data security and local data rules.
