Zimbabwe Caused The Second Major Upset In The T20 World Cup 2026 Defeating Sri Lanka By 6 Wickets

Zimbabwe has once again caused a major upset in the T20 World Cup 2026. After defeating Australia in the group stage, this team has also defeated Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe won against Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the match played at R Premadasa Stadium on Thursday. This team won 3 out of 4 matches in the group stage, while once it remained inconclusive due to rain.

Zimbabwe won its first match against Oman by 8 wickets, after which it pulled off a big upset by defeating Australia by 23 runs. After this, the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland remained inconclusive due to rain.

Zimbabwe team is in Group-1 along with India, West Indies and South Africa in Super-8, while Sri Lankan team is in Group-2 along with New Zealand, England and Pakistan.

On Thursday, after winning the toss and coming to bat, the Sri Lankan team scored 178 runs losing 7 wickets. The opening pair of Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka gave the host team a great start. Both players made a partnership of 54 runs in 5 overs. Kusal was out after scoring 22 runs in 14 balls, after which Nissanka along with Kusal Mendis scored 46 runs in 43 balls to take Sri Lanka to the score of 100. Mendis contributed 14 runs to the team’s account, while Nissanka added 62 runs to the team’s account with 8 fours in 41 balls.

Apart from these, Pawan Ratnayake played an inning of 44 runs in 25 balls with 5 boundaries. From the opposition camp, Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans and Graeme Cremer took 2 wickets each, while one wicket went to Ryan Burl.

In response, Zimbabwe won in 19.3 overs. This team got a great start by the opening pair of Brian Bennett and Tadivanashe Marumani. There was a partnership of 69 runs between the two players in 8.3 overs.

Marumani was out after scoring 34 runs in 26 balls with 1 six and 5 fours, after which Bennett added 29 runs for the second wicket with Ryan Burl, taking the team to the score of 98. Burl returned to the pavilion after playing an innings of 23 runs in 12 balls with 3 boundaries.

From here, Bennett along with captain Sikandar Raza scored 69 runs in 40 balls and took the team to the threshold of victory. Sikandar Raza was out after scoring 45 runs in 26 balls with 4 sixes and 2 fours, after which Bennett played an unbeaten inning of 63 runs in 48 balls with 8 fours, giving the team a great victory. For the host camp, Dushan Hemantha took maximum 2 wickets, while Dasun Shanaka and Dunit Velez took 1 wicket each.
