Indian Railways Hi Tech Security Cover For Train Travel Digital Police Stations To Be Set Up At 400 Stations

The common passenger traveling amidst the hustle and bustle of the station, the sound of trains and thousands of faces often remains uneasy about security. Now, to reduce this concern, Indian Railways has taken a big step. 400 major stations of Northern Railway will be equipped with digital security cover, where every station will act as a high-tech digital police station.

The Railway Ministry has approved Rs 16.47 crore for the first phase of this ambitious project. The aim of Railways is that every passenger present in the station premises should feel safer than before and there is no safe haven left for criminals in the railway premises.

According to Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, under the new system, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel deployed at stations will be equipped with the world’s most advanced fingerprint and iris scanning system.

If a suspect is stopped, his identity will be matched against the national database within moments. The key strengths of this system are the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFEES) and Criminal Procedure Identification (CPI). With the help of these technologies, RPF personnel will scan the fingerprint and iris of the suspect, which will be directly linked to the national database. As soon as the digital records of criminals registered across the country are matched, the complete criminal information of the person concerned will be revealed.

Fingerprint scanners, iris scanners, special web cameras and high-speed workstations will be installed at all the selected 400 stations. Faces will be mapped through cameras, which will make identification more accurate. This technology will be linked to NAFIS and Criminal Procedure Identification System, through which crime records registered across the country can be checked immediately.

Trained human resources will also be deployed to operate the digital police station effectively. The project manager and senior technical officers will monitor the entire system, while junior technical experts will be present 24 hours at the central helpdesk to ensure that any technical glitch does not affect the security system.

Besides, master trainers will train RPF jawans in the practical use of new technology, so that coordination between machine and human is maintained. Railway officials believe that this initiative will increase the safety confidence of all passengers including women, elderly and children. With the help of digital technology, Railways is now moving towards becoming not just a medium of transport but synonymous with safe and reliable travel.
