Major reshuffle in Bangladesh Army; Defense advisor based in India recalled

After the general elections in Bangladesh, with the formation of the new government, a major reshuffle has been made in the military leadership. Just days after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Tariq Rahman won a landslide victory in the general elections held on February 12, the Army Headquarters issued orders for several important appointments and transfers at the top level. According to the order issued on Sunday (February 22), Bangladesh’s Defense Advisor in India, Brigadier General Mohammad Hafizur Rahman has been promoted to Major General. Lieutenant General Mohammad Mainur Rahman has been appointed Chief of General Staff (CGS), the key operational post of the Army. He has earlier headed the Army Training and Doctrine Command. He replaces Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, who has gone on retirement leave.

There has also been a change in the intelligence structure of Bangladesh Military. Major General (Designate) Qaiser Rashid Chaudhary has been appointed Director General of the Directorate General of Force Intelligence (DGFI). He was currently serving as Brigadier General in the Army Headquarters. He replaces Major General Mohammad Jahangir Alam, who has been deputed as Ambassador to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rehman has been appointed Principal Staff Officer (PSO), Armed Forces Division. He was earlier the JOC of the 24th Infantry Division based in Chittagong. At the same time, outgoing PSO Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan has also been given diplomatic appointment in the Ministry of External Affairs.

There has also been a reshuffle in the field level command. Major General JM Amdadul Islam has been made the commandant of East Bengal Regimental Centre, while Major General Ferdous Hasan Saleem has been appointed GOC of 24th Infantry Division.

With these appointments, the command of operational and intelligence leadership in Bangladesh Army has been handed over to new officers.
