Two policemen found dead after being shot near Pakistan border, TTH took responsibility

Two policemen were found dead after being shot on Sunday (February 22) morning at a police post located near the Pakistan border in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. After the incident, panic has spread in the area and security agencies are engaged in investigation from all aspects. The deceased have been identified as ASI Gurnam Singh and Constable Ashok Kumar. This post comes under Dorangala police station area and is located near the Border Security Force (BSF) post. The room where both the policemen were found dead has no door.

As soon as the information was received, police officers led by Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police Aditya reached the spot. “Our cordon team, along with technical and forensic teams, rushed to the spot. We are investigating all angles. One of the injured is from the India Reserve Battalion. The investigation is ongoing and is being handled with caution,” he said. According to officials, these posts, operated in coordination with Punjab Police and BSF, act as a second line of defense on the border.

Village Sarpanch Kamaljit Singh was the first to see the dead bodies. He told that in the morning the SHO of Dorangala called and informed that the personnel deployed at the post were not responding to the call. Both the policemen were found dead when they reached the spot around 8 am. According to him, ASI Gurnam Singh was found lying on his side near a heater, both his hands were in his pockets and blood was flowing from the ear and below the eye. It appears he was keeping himself warm. The other policeman was found sleeping under a quilt, with a bullet wound in his head.

Villagers say that from the condition of the spot it seems that a third person shot both of them and ran away. Police have registered a case against unknown persons. Initially there was talk on social media that the two shot at each other, but officials clarified that the investigation is ongoing and it is too early to reach any conclusion.

Lok Sabha MP from Gurdaspur and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has demanded an independent investigation into the matter. He said that accountability should be fixed and the investigation should be free from political influence. Citing a video, he raised questions on the mutual shootout theory.

Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia shared a video on social media and demanded a fair investigation from the Central Bureau of Investigation. Meanwhile, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring stressed the need to take the matter seriously and conduct a detailed investigation while avoiding speculation.

In a poster circulated on social media, an organization calling itself Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH) has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, police officials have refused to comment on this poster. A senior counter intelligence officer said, we are investigating from all angles.

This double murder that took place near the border has raised serious questions about the security arrangements. The investigating agencies are thoroughly examining forensic evidence, digital inputs and local circumstances.
