Will Kerala Become Keralam Before The 2026 Elections
The Central Government Cabinet is likely to consider the proposal to officially change the name of Kerala to “Kerala” on Wednesday (February 24). The proposal comes after a resolution was passed by the Kerala Assembly, which urged the Center to officially recognize the state’s Malayalam name “Keralaam” in all languages.
According to sources, this issue is being raised at a time when 2026 assembly elections are near in the state, due to which this decision is also considered politically important. The state assembly had earlier also passed a proposal for the name change, but the Union Home Ministry had sent it back for some technical amendments and clarity. The amended resolution was then passed again on 25 June 2024, reiterating that the state be officially called Keralam, in line with its Malayalam name.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while moving the resolution in the Assembly, had said that Keralam more accurately reflects the linguistic identity and historical heritage of the state. He argued that the term has long been prevalent in the Malayalam language and is linked to the concept of a unified Malayalam-speaking region that emerged during the independence movement.
Change in the name of any state requires the approval of the Cabinet of the Central Government, after which the legislative process is completed in the Parliament. If the proposal is approved, the name Keralam will be applied in all official records, notifications and communications of the Central Government. An official announcement is awaited after the cabinet meeting. If the decision is positive, it will be considered a formal resolution of a long-running issue related to the identity of the state.
