Supreme Court instructions on voter list revision in West Bengal!

The Supreme Court has given important directions in the controversy related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of voter list in West Bengal. Judicial officers have been deployed to dispose of lakhs of applications in the cases of logical discrepancy and unmapped category in the state.

Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court SC Told that as per the earlier order of the bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, about 250 judicial officers of the level of District Judge and Additional District Judge are engaged in this verification work. But, this number is proving to be very less in front of such a large number of applications.

After this, the Supreme Court has ordered to involve civil judges also in this process to speed it up. Chief Justice Surya Kant clearly said that if need arises, additional judicial officers can also be sought from the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court and Orissa High Court. The court stressed that this work should be completed on a war footing, so that the voter list can be prepared on time.

The Supreme Court has also ruled that if the verification of all cases in the logical discrepancy or unmapped category is not completed by 28 February 2026, the Election Commission may issue a supplementary list after publishing the final voter list.

The court made it clear that the eligible voters included in the supplementary list will also be considered part of the final list to be released on February 28. That means they will be considered valid voters and will have full right to vote.

The court has appealed for cooperation from both the parties, so that the election process remains fair and transparent. Judicial intervention will now speed up the disposal of these cases and the rights of millions of voters will be protected.
