Modi Cabinet approves multi-tracking railway projects worth Rs 9,072 crore
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday (February 24) approved three multi-tracking railway projects in four states. A total investment of Rs 9,072 crore will be made on these projects. These projects include doubling of Gondia-Jabalpur railway line, Punarkh-Kiul third and fourth lines and Gamharia-Chandil third and fourth lines.
These three projects will cover eight districts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, adding about 307 kilometers to the existing network of Indian Railways, and these projects are targeted to be completed by 2030-31. The proposed multi-tracking projects will provide better rail connectivity to about 5,407 villages with a total population of about 98 lakh.
With the increase in capacity, rail connectivity to many major tourist destinations of the country will also improve. These include Kachnar Shiv Temple of Jabalpur, Kanha National Park of Balaghat, Gangulpara Dam and Falls, Pench National Park, Dhuandhar Falls, Bargi Dam, Gomji-Somji Temple, Chandil Dam, Dalma Hill Top, Hesakocha Falls, Raijama Valley and Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.
Increasing line capacity will improve mobility and enhance operational efficiency and service reliability of Indian Railways. These multi-tracking projects will streamline operations and reduce congestion.
According to the official statement, these projects are in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘New India’ that will help the people of the region become ‘self-reliant’ through comprehensive development and increase employment opportunities.
These projects have been created under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which aims to enhance multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and consultation with stakeholders. The statement said that these projects will ensure smooth movement of people, goods and services.
These projects are also important for transportation of goods like coal, steel, iron ore, cement, ballast stone, fly ash, fertilizers, limestone, manganese, dolomite, food grains and petroleum products. The capacity addition will enable additional freight transportation of approximately 52 million tonnes every year.
Railways is an environment-friendly and energy efficient mode of transport, which will help in achieving the country’s climate goals and reduce logistics costs. This will reduce oil imports by 6 crore liters and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30 crore kilograms, which is equivalent to planting 1 crore trees.
