‘Dolphin Hunter’ INS Anjadeep joins Navy; Know 7 important things related to Anjdeep
The Indian Navy formally commissioned the state-of-the-art Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft ‘INS Anjadeep’ at Chennai Port on Friday (February 27). The induction of this warship is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s coastal security and maritime surveillance capability.
“Continuing the momentum of Atmanirbhar Bharat! Introducing the construction journey of Anjadeep – the next powerhouse ASW shallow water craft,” the Navy said on social media platform X. This ship is being considered as another example of indigenous manufacturing capacity under the ‘Self-reliant India’ initiative.
Know 7 important things related to INS Anjdeep:
1. Third ship of ASW project
INS Anjadeep is the third of the eight ships being built under the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) project. The project focuses on enhancing anti-submarine capability in shallow sea areas.
2. Indigenous manufacturing
It has been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), a Kolkata-based public sector defense shipyard. This ship has been specially designed to meet the challenges of ‘Littoral Combat Environment’ i.e. coastal and shallow water areas.
3. 77 meters long, speed of 25 knots
The 77 meter long warship is equipped with a high-speed water-jet propulsion system, allowing it to achieve a maximum speed of 25 knots. This will allow quick response and continuous operation of operations.
4. Role of ‘Dolphin Hunter’
This vessel has been prepared for the role of ‘Dolphin Hunter’. Its main function is to detect, pursue and disable enemy submarines in coastal areas.
5. State-of-the-art indigenous weapon system
INS Anjadeep has been fitted with state-of-the-art indigenous anti-submarine warfare weapons and sensor package. It consists of hull-mounted sonar ‘Abhay’ along with lightweight torpedoes and ASW rockets.
6. Importance of name
‘Anjadeep’ is named after an island located in the Arabian Sea off the Karwar coast of Karnataka. This naming reflects Indian maritime heritage and strategic importance. The deployment of this ship will also strengthen the security capability of the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
7. Multi-role capability
Apart from anti-submarine operations, the warship is also capable of carrying out coastal surveillance, low intensity maritime operations and search and rescue operations.
With the commissioning of INS Anjadeep, the Indian Navy has further strengthened its operational capability in shallow water areas. This ship will play an important role in protecting the country’s extensive maritime interests.
