Justice Sushruta Arvind Dharmadhikari will be the new Chief Justice of Madras High Court.

Justice Sushruta Arvind Dharmadhikari, who was part of the bench hearing ‘The Kerala Story 2—Goes Beyond’ case, has been recommended for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Madras High Court. This decision was finally taken in the meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium held on Thursday (26 February).

Justice Dharmadhikari is scheduled to take oath of office on March 6. Current Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava will retire on March 5. After the appointment, Justice Dharmadhikari will transfer from his current posting in the Kerala High Court to the Madras High Court in Chennai and will take up top administrative and judicial responsibilities there.

Justice Dharmadhikari, a native of Raipur, started his legal career in the year 1992. He practiced law in the Madhya Pradesh High Court for about 25 years and gained recognition for defending complex civil and constitutional cases.

He also served as Standing Counsel for the Government of India, where he represented several major central institutions, including the Reserve Bank of India. In 2016, he was appointed a judge in the Madhya Pradesh High Court and in 2018 he became a permanent judge. He was transferred to the Kerala High Court in April 2025.

With this appointment, the collegium has also implemented a new administrative policy. Under this, the Chief Justice selected for a High Court will be transferred to the new High Court about two months before the post becomes vacant.

The objective of this initiative is to enable the selected Chief Justice to become familiar with the local administrative system and the functioning of the court even before assuming office. The Collegium believes that this will improve judicial efficiency and administrative continuity.

As part of this process, Justice Dharmadhikari will be kept apprised of the arrangements of the Madras High Court until he formally assumes charge on March 6. This appointment is being seen as an important step towards administrative reforms in the judiciary.
