Afghan Air Force air strikes on Pak military bases near Islamabad

The Taliban administration in Afghanistan on Friday (February 27) claimed that it had carried out coordinated air strikes on Pakistani military targets, including those located near Islamabad. However, these attacks could not be independently confirmed and there was no immediate official reaction from Pakistan.

The Taliban Defense Ministry said in a statement that the Air Force of the Ministry of National Defense targeted a military camp in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near Faizabad, an army base in Jamrud and a military base in Abbottabad at around 11 am local time. Describing the operation as successful, the ministry said that major military facilities of Pakistan were targeted.

Taliban officials said the attacks were in response to overnight airstrikes by Pakistan in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia. Earlier, Taliban had claimed that it targeted Pakistani border posts, in which 55 to 60 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

On the other hand, Pakistan said that 133 Taliban members were killed in its overnight operation. The Taliban administration has denied any casualties on their side.

Earlier, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif had said that the country is at war with Afghanistan. While posting on X, he wrote that Afghanistan has become a colony of India. Khawaja Asif also claimed that Pakistan tried to stabilize the situation through direct dialogue and friendly countries, but Afghanistan adopted an aggressive stance.

Iran has offered mediation amid rising tensions. Iran has said that it is ready to help facilitate dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan and promote mutual understanding and cooperation. At present, the claims of both the countries have not been independently confirmed. The situation is changing rapidly and concerns regarding regional stability have increased. The international community is now keeping an eye on whether diplomatic efforts will be able to stem the escalating military conflict.
