Assam Assembly Elections: Congress approves 30 names, will Gaurav Gogoi contest from Jorhat?

Congress has almost finalized the list of names of 30 out of 42 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Sources associated with Congress informed that Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and President of Assam Congress Gaurav Gogoi can be made a candidate from Jorhat Assembly seat.

Sources said that Congress has brainstormed on 42 seats in Assam, out of which about 30 names have been approved and Gaurav Gogoi is likely to contest from Jorhat. According to sources, the party’s big Muslim face MP Rakibul Hasan can also contest the assembly elections. However, the first list of candidates will be released after the official announcement of the elections.

Earlier, information came to light that the preliminary panel for 30 assembly constituencies was prepared by the state level scrutiny committee after consultation with district units, senior leaders and observers. It is said that this list was sent for the approval of All India Congress Committee (UGC). However, concerns were also raised about the winnability, organizational acceptability and local feedback of many potential candidates.

Gaurav Gogoi is currently an MP from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat of Assam. Gaurav Gogoi defeated Tapan Gogoi of BJP in the 2024 general elections. Gaurav got 7,51,771 votes, while Tapan got 6,07,378 votes, making him win by a margin of 1,44,393 votes.

Gaurav Gogoi is currently counted among the leaders close to the Gandhi family. After becoming an MP, Congress elected him as the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Parliament, after which he has been a constant attacker against the BJP inside and outside the House. He came into limelight in the year 2023 after the no-confidence motion against the central government. Let us tell you that Gaurav Gogoi is also the head of Assam Congress, who has been entrusted with the responsibilities of elections in the state.
