Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate an important project of semiconductor manufacturing sector in Sanand, Gujarat today (28 February). The move is considered a major milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey and will strengthen the country’s participation in the global supply chain. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the semiconductor ATMP (assembly, testing, marking and packaging) facility of Micron Technology’s Indian unit at around 3:45 pm. On this occasion he will also address the gathering present.
The inauguration will mark the formal beginning of commercial production and shipment of ‘Made-in-India’ semiconductor memory modules from the Sanand plant. This is being considered an important achievement towards strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem and increasing the country’s participation in the global semiconductor value chain.
This project was the first initiative sanctioned under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The foundation stone of this project with a total investment of more than Rs 22,500 crore was laid in September 2023. Construction work started immediately after approval.
When fully operational, this ATMP facility at Sanand will be equipped with approximately 5 lakh square feet of cleanroom space. It is believed to be one of the largest raised-floor cleanrooms in the world. The plant has been designed to meet the needs of global customers and the demand for memory and storage solutions arising from the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence and high-performance computing.
The plant will process advanced dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and NAND wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products that will be supplied to global markets.
The operationalization of the Sanand plant will strengthen India’s position as a competitive and reliable semiconductor manufacturing destination. This initiative is in line with the broader government vision of building a self-reliant and resilient technology ecosystem.
