Mob Attacks Us Consulate In Karachi 8 Killed Over 30 Injured

Violent clashes broke out outside the US Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan on Sunday (March 1) following outrage over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to local media reports, at least 8 people died in the encounter between police and protesters, while more than 30 people were injured. The demonstrations were organized by Shia organizations who marched from Sultanabad towards Mai Kolachi in an attempt to reach near the US embassy compound which is under heavy security. The protest turned violent when a large number of protesters broke the barricades and started moving forward.

The administration sealed several major roads including MT Khan Road. Police released tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Officials allege that the protesters pelted stones and tried to break the security cordon. Traffic police appealed to people to stay away from the area, while clashes were reported at several places, including Nashim Chowk.

As tensions escalated, some protesters reached the entrance of the embassy. Videos circulated on social media showed the mob vandalizing the entry area and setting parts of the building on fire. It was reported that some people were trying to break windows and doors to enter the main building.

The demonstrations intensified after the confirmation of the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes in Iran. The Iranian government has announced 40 days of mourning after the death of the Islamic leader. Apart from Karachi, demonstrations were also held outside the US Embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Incidents of protest have come to light in many countries amid increasing military tension in the Middle East. Protesters accused Washington of destabilizing the region and demanded an end to foreign military intervention.

Protests also took place in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir, India, where protesters burned effigies of US President Donald Trump. Shia community leader Seyed Samar Kazmi condemned Khamenei’s assassination, claiming that the Iranian leader was treacherously killed by the US and Israel. He said, “This is not the first time we have lost our leader, but we will not forget the death of our dear leader. We will tell our future generations how America and Israel treacherously killed our leader… A section of Muslims has always raised their voice for the victims… He was killed just because he raised his voice against the killings in Palestine.”

At present, security has been tightened in Karachi and the situation is being closely monitored. The administration has appealed to maintain peace, while tension remains in the area.
