Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark J Carney in the national capital on Monday (March 2). The two leaders met at Hyderabad House and delegation level talks are scheduled after this. On Monday (2 March), Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as part of his official visit and appreciated his commitment to taking forward the future partnership between the two countries.
In a post on Twitter, Jaishankar said he was pleased to meet Prime Minister Carney during his visit to the national capital. “Delighted to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark J Carney in New Delhi this morning. I appreciate his commitment to strengthening our future partnership,” he wrote.
The Canadian Prime Minister arrived in the national capital on Sunday (March 1) evening after visiting Mumbai, which is part of the next leg of his India tour. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasad welcomed him at the airport. Jaishankar also met his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand on Sunday evening.
Carney is on an official visit to India from February 27 to March 2 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is his first official tour of India, which began with his arrival in Mumbai on February 27. In the high-level talks to be held at Hyderabad House today, the two Prime Ministers will review the progress made in various areas of the India-Canada strategic partnership. Building on the previous meetings in Kananaskis (G7 Summit) in June 2025 and Johannesburg (G20 Summit) in November 2025, the two leaders will review ongoing cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation and people-to-people ties.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global developments. In addition to formal talks, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney will also participate in the India-Canada CEO Forum. The visit comes at a time when the process of normalization of India-Canada bilateral relations is underway, and Monday’s talks will focus on key strategic and economic issues of mutual interest to the two countries.
