Assam Assembly Elections: Congress’s first list released, opposition alliance divided
Before the Assam Assembly elections, political activity has intensified in the state. Congress released its first list of 42 candidates on Tuesday (March 3). The most talked about name in the list is that of Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, who will contest the assembly elections for the first time. He will contest from Jorhat assembly seat. Senior leader Ripun Bora has been given ticket from Barchalla. With the announcement of the candidates, the discussion about a possible opposition alliance in Assam has come to an end. Congress has fielded its candidates on the seats where Raiser Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad were claiming.
Gaurav Gogoi is currently the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha and the President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. After being declared the candidate, he expressed gratitude to party president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. He wrote, “I am grateful to the people of Jorhat Lok Sabha, without whom I would not have been able to reach this position.
The party has fielded Abhijeet Paul from Silchar, Indranil Pegu from Majuli and Meera Borthakur Goswami from Dispur. The list also includes members of several political families. Tanjeel Hussain, son of Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, has got the ticket from Samguri. Prateek, son of MP Pradyut Bordoloi, has been made the candidate from Margherita and Pranjal, son of former Union Minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar, has been made the candidate from Chabua-Lahowal.
Apart from this, many other names including Girish Barua (Bongaigaon), Mahanand Sarkar (Barpeta-SC), Ramen Singh Rabha (Boko-Chaygaon-ST), Nandita Das (Hajo-Sualkuchi-SC), Satyabrata Kalita (Kamalpur), Ashok Kumar Sharma (Nalbari) and Ratul Patwari (Tihu) are included.
With the announcement of the candidates, the discussion about a possible opposition alliance in Assam has come to an end. Congress has fielded its candidates on the seats where Raiser Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad were claiming. Raising party chief Akhil Gogoi termed it unfortunate and said that Congress has taken a unilateral decision despite the talks continuing.
The Raiser party has only one MLA in the current assembly, while the Lurinjyoti Gogoi-led Assam Jatiya Parishad has no MLA.
Elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are likely in March or April 2026, although the Election Commission of India is yet to announce an official date. Currently the Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA has the majority. BJP has 64 MLAs and is supported by AGP, UPPL and BPF. In the 2021 elections, the BJP alliance retained power by winning 75 seats, while the Congress alliance got 50 seats.
Political analysts believe that the BJP-AGP alliance is in a strong position on about 100 majority seats. In such a situation, the attention of Congress and other opposition parties is focused on limited seats, which became a major obstacle in the path of possible alliance. The first list of Congress has made it clear that this time the party is adopting the strategy of contesting the elections on its own.
