Azerbaijan summons Iranian envoy after drone attack!

Azerbaijan has summoned Iran’s envoy after a drone strike near an airport and a school injured two people. “One drone struck the airport terminal building in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, while the other drone fell near a school building in the village of Shakrabad,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Along with this, while appealing to Iran, he said, “We strongly condemn these drone attacks carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which caused damage to the airport building and injured two civilians.”

According to the ministry, this attack has violated international law. Azerbaijan has demanded Iran to immediately clarify this matter and take necessary steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

Baku also said that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take retaliatory measures in this matter. Also, Iran’s ambassador has been called and a strong protest has been lodged on this incident.

An Iranian drone attacked an Azerbaijani airport near the common border between the two countries. This is the first time Iran has targeted a state in the Caucasus since the US-Israeli war against Tehran began.

Azerbaijan has taken a neutral stance in the Middle East conflict. It recently forged closer ties with Israel and the Trump administration, while gradually distancing itself from Moscow, a traditional ally in the Caucasus.

There are no US military bases in the country, which suggests Iran could expand its attacks beyond targets directly linked to the US military.

Baku’s growing military cooperation with Israel has led to friction with Tehran, although the two neighbors maintain largely pragmatic relations.

Both countries are majority Shia Muslims, and Iran is home to millions of Azeri people – estimates range from 15 million to more than 20 million – many of whom live in northwestern provinces bordering Azerbaijan.
