Allahabad High Court Seeks Records From Center On Rahul Gandhi’s Alleged British Citizenship

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has asked the Central Government to present records related to the dispute related to the alleged British citizenship of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the court. The court has directed the Home Ministry to present the entire file related to this case before the court before the next hearing.

A bench of Justice Rajiv Singh gave this direction on March 9 during the hearing of a petition seeking registration of FIR against Rahul Gandhi. The court has scheduled the next hearing of the case for March 19, 2026.

Actually, the matter is related to the petition filed by Karnataka BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir. The petitioner has alleged that Rahul Gandhi may have dual citizenship and on this basis an FIR should be registered against him and investigation should be conducted.

Earlier, on January 28, 2026, the special MP-MLA court based in Lucknow had rejected the petition for registering an FIR in this case. The court had said in its order that it does not have its jurisdiction to decide on questions related to citizenship. After this the petitioner challenged that order in the High Court.

Several legal provisions have been cited in the petition. Apart from various sections of the Indian Judicial Code, provisions of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, Passport Act, 1967 and Foreigners Act, 1946 have also been included.

During the hearing, the court asked central government lawyer Raj Kumar Singh what steps the Center has taken so far on the complaint related to Rahul Gandhi’s alleged British citizenship. After this, the court directed the Home Ministry to present all the documents related to this dispute in the court.

This criminal complaint was earlier filed in the special MP-MLA court of Rae Bareli. However, later on the demand of the petitioner, on 17 December 2025, the Lucknow bench of the High Court transferred the case from Rae Bareli to Lucknow.

After the demand for FIR was rejected by the special court of Lucknow, the petitioner moved the High Court. Now based on the records presented by the Central Government before the court, further hearing of the case will be held on March 19.
