Unique pregnancy test of ancient times: Wheat and barley used to reveal the pregnancy and sex of the child!

In today’s era, medical science has advanced so much that within a few minutes with the help of machines and test kits, it can be found out whether a woman is pregnant or not. Modern technologies like blood test, urine test and ultrasound can easily detect even the smallest changes in the body. But thousands of years ago, when these facilities did not exist, people had to resort to different traditional and unique methods to detect pregnancy.

One such interesting method was used in ancient Egypt. According to historians, around 1350 BC, Egyptians used wheat and barley seeds to detect the pregnancy of women. This method not only indicated pregnancy, but at that time people believed that it could also reveal the sex of the child.

According to media reports and an article in Mental Floss, at that time, medical experts used to ask women to urinate on wheat and barley seeds. This process continued for several days. After this, results were obtained by observing the changes in the seeds.

The belief was that if wheat seeds started sprouting then it was considered to be a sign of a girl in the womb, whereas if a plant emerged from barley seeds then it was considered a sign of a boy. If, even after urinating for several days, no seed germinated, it was believed that the woman was not pregnant.

Interestingly, in modern times some scientists have also studied this method. According to them, some hormones present in the urine of pregnant women can affect the germination of seeds, so this old method may also have a partial scientific basis. However, at that time the claim of finding out the sex of the child was not considered scientifically correct.

In this way, even before today’s modern medical technologies, people used to do different experiments to get information about pregnancy based on their limited resources. That method may have been time-consuming and not entirely accurate, but it is an interesting example of ancient medical knowledge and human curiosity.
