Ravi takes oath as the new Governor of West Bengal!

R. N. Ravi took oath as the new Governor of West Bengal on Thursday morning. The swearing-in ceremony was held at around 11:30 am at Lok Bhawan (earlier Raj Bhawan).

Sujoy Paul administered the oath to the new Governor. On this occasion, many prominent people including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay and State Left Front Chairman Biman Bose were present.

Although, Many people were surprised that despite receiving the invitation, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari did not attend the program. Interesting thing was that no representative of Bharatiya Janata Party was seen in this function.

R. N. Ravi has replaced C.V. Anand Bose. Anand Bose suddenly resigned from his post on the evening of 5 March and R. N. Ravi was declared his successor.

Ravi reached Kolkata on Wednesday. The same evening Anand Bose left the city for his home state Kerala.

Before leaving the state, C.V. Anand Bose posted an emotional “open letter” to the people of West Bengal on the social media account of Lok Bhavan. In this letter he wrote that his emotional bond with West Bengal and its people will always remain.

R. N. Ravi is the second officer to become the Governor of West Bengal in the last one and a half decade, who has previously held the top post in the Intelligence Bureau.

Earlier, just before the crucial assembly elections of 2011, M.K. Narayanan was sworn in as the Governor of West Bengal. Narayanan had previously been the Intelligence Bureau chief and also India’s National Security Advisor. In that election, the 34-year-long rule of the Left Front ended and Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress came to power.

This could just be a coincidence. But, R. N. Ravi’s appointment as the new Governor of West Bengal comes at a time when important assembly elections are about to be held in the state.
