Police confirmed the incident on Friday (March 13).

According to the police, both the victim women received a call from an unknown person, who claimed to be a representative of a gas distribution company. The caller told the women that they would have to update the information related to gas and for this they asked them to download an APK file on their mobile phones, open it and fill the required information in it.

After the women followed the instructions, an amount of approximately Rs 4 lakh was debited from their bank accounts within a short time. According to Assistant Police Commissioner Suhas Hemade, two separate cases of online financial fraud have been registered in this matter at Dombivali police station and the police have started investigation.

This incident has come to light at a time when there are reports of acute shortage of LPG cylinders in many parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

During this time, the government has rejected the rumors in the press conference. The government has said that fuel supply continues at 100 percent.

Apart from this, more than 20 percent of the hotels in Raigad district and Navi Mumbai also closed their operations till March 11 due to shortage of LPG. Hoteliers allege that gas cylinders are being sold in the black market at a price of Rs 3,000 or more, which is much higher than the normal price.

Hotel organizations have demanded the administration to ensure adequate LPG supply as soon as possible, so that more business closures can be prevented and the livelihood of thousands of people associated with this sector can be protected.
