India Sends Back Additional Crew Members Of Irins Lavan

India has sent back the additional crew members of the Iranian Navy warship IRINS Lavan to their country. Iran had sought permission to dock the ship in Kochi due to technical fault, which was approved by India on humanitarian grounds. Now amid the increasing military tension between Iran and America, it has been decided to send back the unnecessary crew members of this ship. More than 50 of the ship’s total 183 crew members are still present in India as the warship is currently berthed in Kochi.

Additional sailors from IRINS Lavan left India on a Turkish Airlines flight. The plane also carried the bodies of more than 80 Iranian sailors brought from Colombo. This plane reached Kochi late night on Friday (13 March). The dead sailors were aboard another Iranian warship that was reportedly sunk by a US submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka on March 4.

IRINS Lavan has been deployed in Kochi since March 4 after a technical problem arose. The ship was granted emergency docking permission on March 1 following a request by Iran. According to the information, Iranian sailors of IRINS Lavan will return to Iran by road via Yerevan.

Here, New Delhi is making continuous efforts to ensure the safe movement of more than two dozen Indian-flagged merchant ships deployed on both sides of the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, on Thursday night, India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to his Iranian counterpart Seyyed Abbas Araghachi. This was the fourth conversation between the two leaders since the crisis began in West Asia.
